About

Jena-Optronik GmbH, the space business of Jenoptik AG, has been acquired by Astrium, a wholly owned subsidiary of EADS (European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company). Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Jena-Optronik is a leading German-based supplier of components and sub-systems for satellites, primarily for commercial applications, in the areas of guidance, navigation and control sensors, and optoelectronic instrumentation. Jena-Optronik serves a global market driven by long term space programmes and increasing satellite launches for communications, earth observation, defence and security applications.

Astrium is dedicated to providing civil and defence space systems and services. In 2009, Astrium had a turnover of €4.8 billion and more than 15,000 employees in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and the Netherlands. EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2009, EADS – comprising Airbus, Astrium, Cassidian and Eurocopter – generated revenues of €42.8 billion and employed a workforce of more than 119,000.

Jenoptik AG is an integrated optoelectronics group operating through five divisions: Lasers & Material Processing, Optical Systems, Industrial Metrology, Traffic Solutions and Defence & Civil Systems.
