A-Life Medical, Inc. (“A-Life” or “the Company”), a portfolio company of Sorrento Ventures, recently completed its sale to Ingenix, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, Inc. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

San Diego, California-based A-Life is the pioneer and leading provider of computer-assisted coding (CAC) products and services for the healthcare industry. Using its proprietary and patented Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology, LifeCode, A-Life’s software as a service-based solution deciphers electronic transcribed patient encounters via the Internet through its data center, which are then appropriately coded for reimbursement purposes. A-Life’s NLP-based CAC solutions address medical coding needs within the physician and hospital sectors. The Company processes more than five million transactions monthly, has thousands of users and provides coding services to more than 40,000 physicians nationwide. Its customers include medical billing companies, physician groups, university medical centers and hospitals.

Ingenix, headquartered in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, is a leader in the research and development, marketing and integration of healthcare information technology solutions. It is wholly-owned by UnitedHealth Group, Inc., a diversified managed care and benefits organization with approximately $90 billion in annual sales.

The revenue cycle management space, which covers hospitals, physicians, payers and consumers as well as information technology and outsourcing services participants, is an area of particular focus and expertise for Baird. This transaction is Baird’s 12th in the revenue cycle management space since 2007.
