Inside the industry's top-ranked corporate access

In late 2011, Amy Junker was promoted to lead Baird’s Corporate Access team. She is also Associate Director of Research alongside Senior Research Analyst David Tarantino.

What is Corporate Access?
When an institutional client is thinking about investing in a company, one of the things they want to do is meet face-to-face with the company’s leaders and learn more about the company’s strategy, growth, uses for cash and more. Baird’s Corporate Access team helps facilitate access for qualified investors. Members of our team work with executives of companies covered by our Research team to identify the right markets to travel to in order to meet with investors. At the end of the day, our goal is to get companies in front of the investors that are most likely to purchase their stock.

How does Baird Corporate Access differ from other firms?
When it comes to providing Corporate Access, it is really about arranging productive meetings for both our institutional clients and the company management teams, all while providing seamless execution and logistics. In fact, Baird ranked No. 1 for providing access to small- and mid-cap companies’ management in Greenwich Associates’ 2013 survey of small- and mid-cap money managers. We also believe we excel relative to our peers because of the quality of our research, tenure of our sales team and strong trading execution. For the past 10 years, Baird has been recognized as the No. 1 “most trusted” source of equity research and highest quality sales by Greenwich Associates’ annual survey.

We’ve been praised for our execution of our corporate access trips. Companies that travel with us usually return for future meetings because in addition to high-quality meetings, we provide flawless logistics. You would be surprised how our competitors – both large and small – just can’t get that part right. We really strive to make sure companies that choose to travel with us enjoy smooth, consistent days with great meetings.

What are Corporate Access' goals for the rest of 2013 and beyond?
When I took over the role as Associate Director of Research at the end of 2011, I was tasked with growing Corporate Access. Our team saw huge growth in 2012 – we did 541 domestic and international trips – a 19% increase over 2011. Our goal for 2013 is for much more modest growth in our number of trips with a focus on our largest markets and the quality of the companies we partner with. We’ve already hosted a number of senior executives from very well-known companies like Starbucks, Google and Adobe, so we are off to a good start to the year.

Corporate Access directors typically come from sales backgrounds, but your background is in equity research. Do you see this as an advantage in your roles at Baird?
My background is certainly a little different. I studied math as an undergraduate and while I was pursuing my master’s, I kind of fell into this business. Prior to joining Baird, I worked as a junior analyst at William Blair and Lehman Brothers. I came to Baird 10 years ago and started as an associate in research covering supply chain technology stocks under Reik Read. I was promoted to Senior Analyst in 2006 and covered the education services sector for almost seven years before moving into my Corporate Access role at the end of 2011. Additionally, as Associate Directors of Research, David Tarantino and I are responsible for the recruitment, retention, and development of all of the Research Analysts, Associates, and Senior Associates (everyone underneath the Senior Analyst level).

I came into the role with a deep understanding of how stocks move and the importance of the research relationship, but I’ve had the opportunity to spend time understanding Sales & Trading more thoroughly. My background in Research and role as Associate Director of Research helps when I meet with companies and pitch our platform. To be able to go into meetings and explain that I spent twelve years in equity research and talk about the quality of our research and what that means at Baird is a big advantage. I also spend a significant chunk of my time on our Sales and Trading floor so I can interact with my peers and leverage their expertise as well.
