Job Flexibility

Job Flexibility Most “good” workplaces offer flexible work arrangements. What helps make Baird such a great place to work is that associates are truly encouraged to use these benefits – and many do. This is because Baird believes flexibility is indispensable in attracting and retaining the very best people.

Flexibility at Baird means many different things, including:

  • Staggering work hours to meet daily parenting needs
  • Telecommuting
  • Job sharing
  • Summer hours
  • Accommodating community activities
  • Special arrangements to deal with family emergencies or other needs
At least 20% of Baird’s employees have a formally recognized flexible work arrangements and many others have informally arranged some flexibility in their work schedules. To support this, Baird has designed guidelines to ensure flex arrangements work best for the associate and for Baird. The firm also provides managers with training in the importance of flexibility in the workplace, emphasizing that – more than just being a “nice thing to do” – these arrangements make good business sense.

Our dedication to respecting associates’ needs for balance in their home and work lives has been profiled in the national media.

In 2006 and 2007, Baird was listed as one of the top 10 best companies where employees feel “encouraged to balance their work and personal life” among the "FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For®". And, in 2005, President, Chairman & CEO Paul Purcell was featured in a BusinessWeek Online Extra article titled, “How Baird Keeps Its Balance: The financial-services firm is a leader in providing employees with work/life balance options.”

The best indications Baird has that our flexibility policy is working come from the people it is working for:
“Baird was the one company I found that understood that I could perform to the best of my abilities because I had a flexible work arrangement,” Audrey says. “The fact that Baird offered me the opportunity to become a shareholder is a recognition that my flexible work arrangement is not standing in the way of my career development. My commitment to Baird and my future here could not be greater.”

“When I told Baird I sailed my way onto the Unitied States Disabled Sailing Team and had a good chance to represent the United States in the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, Baird said ‘How can we help?’,” John says. “Practice, practice, practice is the training mantra for any athlete trying to compete at the highest levels. Thanks to the flexibility offered by Baird, I can take the time off from work I need to practice and train.”

Erin says, “I'm thrilled that Baird has given me the opportunity to work four days a week. It's the perfect balance for my family; I still get to work in a position that I find enjoyable and challenging, and then I have that one extra day that I can enjoy with my young daughter."

“It was amazing what Baird did for my family,” Bill says. “I don’t know any other firm that would go to the lengths they did for me as a then-junior member of the team. It is a classic example of how great the Baird culture is, and that culture has earned my lasting loyalty.”

“My friends keep telling me I should retire,” says Mary Ann. “Why should I? Right now, I can play golf with them every week and go out to lunch, while still enjoying a job that I love.”

“The flexibility I have is really priceless,” says Sharon, the mother of five, including 2-year-old triplets. “Paul, Mary Ellen and Baird in general have really allowed me to focus on my family and to get through this challenging time. They know that by giving me flexibility now, it will help make me a better employee. I am committed to Baird and meeting our clients’ investment objectives. The flexibility has allowed me to care for my family and continue my career as a portfolio manager.”

“It has been a huge relief to continue in this role at Baird and be close to family,” says Michael, who moved to his hometown to be near his elderly parents and now telecommutes several days a week. “I’m now able to focus on my job rather than being concerned about what may be happening back home. The support I’ve received from Baird in making this transition has been overwhelming and affirms my belief that Baird truly is a special place to work.”
