Your First Year
In their first years, Baird’s institutional Trading associates develop skills through a process that involves understanding clients' investment thesis, current holdings, and industry trends; using Baird tools to identify appropriate investment opportunities; and talking directly to clients to describe how those opportunities fit the client’s strategy.
What can you expect during your first year at Baird? We asked a few associates to describe their first-year experiences.
An Associate's Perspective
"My first year at Baird has been a very exciting time. The environment you work in is fast-paced and challenging, especially during earnings season. Much of your time is spent observing the different sales teams and how they digest each morning's research to create meaningful calls and investment ideas for our institutional investor clients. Increasingly, I have participated in making these client calls, which has been the most enjoyable aspect of the job to date."
"You can expect to spend a significant amount of time as a first-year associate focused on digesting and understanding the tremendous amount of research generated by Baird's analysts. Baird provides coverage for more than 500 companies, and my No. 1 job is to learn the fundamental story and investment thesis for each of these companies, as well as the sectors in which they operate. I have heard this process described as "drinking from a fire hose," and it really rings true. However, the time involved in this process is absolutely an investment, and each day completed enhances my ability to develop investment ideas and make my clients money."
Another Associate's Perspective
"The best way to describe my first few months with Baird is as a very energetic and intellectually stimulating environment. The day-to-day activities call for a very dynamic personality, requiring strong analytical, communication and creative skill sets to effectively serve our clients. Some of the projects I have been involved in to date include: building business cases for why our clients should or should not take positions in some of the companies we follow, generating investment opportunities that fit a client's specific parameters, and presenting those opportunities to my peers. It is a pleasure to work with such high-caliber individuals in a team environment on a daily basis."
